How to Make Cheap Stocking Name Tags

It’s gotten to the point in the holiday season where I keep adding little details to the Christmas decor around the house. No item in our house is safe from getting a red velvet bow tied around it.

The small personal touches are my favorite part every year. And these DIY stocking name tags were by far the easiest of them all.

If you’re like me always trying to find ways to get creative without breaking the bank, you’ll love these easy-peasy customizable stocking name tags made from—you guessed it—luggage tags!

I wasn’t into the idea of spending $300 on a set of customized stockings. Have you seen how much personalized stockings are?!!

So I improvised…

Supplies

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure.

I’ve used these leather luggage tags before for organizing our pantry cabinet, and while I was doing that whole process, I had a thought that they would be great for personalizing our plain stockings this year.

Step 1 – Remove Plastic Window on Tag

I just cut out the clear plastic window of the tag with the knife blade so the names wouldn’t have a glare.

Step 2 – Print Names on Cardstock

You can snag this vintage style blank stocking label set by clicking here to subscribe to get access to my full printable library. (If you’re already a subscriber, the printable library password is at the bottom of every email newsletter I send.)

You can use the free version of Canva, Picmonkey, Google Docs, or Kapwing to type your family’s names on top of the tag image. I used the font called Parisienne.

After printing and cutting out the name card, slide it inside of the luggage tag slot.

Step 3 – Attach Name Tags to Stockings

Loop a strand of twine through the luggage tag and safety pin the twine to the top inside of the stocking.

Voila!

I used the same labels from our pantry too since I love how simple yet charming they look.

How to Add Text to a Stocking Name Tag

If you’re a Picmonkey user, here are the steps to add your own names to your labels after you have downloaded the printable file to your computer:

  • Start on the Picmonkey.com home page.
  • Click the “Edit a Photo” button.
  • Click “Open New” -> “Computer” -> choose the printable file you downloaded from me.
  • Click the “Tt” button on the left side toolbar.
  • Click “Add Text” and choose your preferred font.
  • Type your name and size the text box as you wish.
  • Move the text box on top of a blank label into position.
  • Repeat for any other names.
  • To save, click “export”.
  • Print onto white cardstock, and you have antique style labels for your stockings.

If you prefer to work in Google Docs, you can use this video to help you add names to the labels.

Or if you have pretty handwriting, just wing it with a Sharpie and know that I’m very jealous of your skills. 😉

These babies look pretty fancy considering they cost $38 for all 5 personalized stockings. They’re every bit as cute as the custom designer versions.

Even just the stocking tags cost somewhere around $10 each usually, but ours that were 87 cents are hard to beat.

As an alternative, you can use lettered Christmas ornaments or initial keychains from the craft store as an easy DIY stocking name label.

I found these initial keychains for $1 at Hobby Lobby and sprayed them with gold spray paint.
